Australia’s Suburbs See Slowing Sales
Leichhardt, a Sydney suburb where homes are selling in about 34 days, saw the fastest-selling real estate in June, according to data from Domain. It was followed by Strathpine, on Brisbane’s northside, where the average number of days on market was 39, and Knox, to the east of Melbourne, with an average of 42 days. Still, across Australia, houses took 20 to 30 days longer to sell in June than they did this time last year. “Generally speaking, as the market slows down, you tend to find homes stay in the market longer because it takes time for homeowners to realize that the market is changing and [they] need to adjust the asking price,” said Domain’s chief of research and economics, Nicola Powell. Chinese Government Considers Easing Borrowing Restrictions for Some Buyers
China could ease borrowing rules to spur a rebound in the property market. Regulators could change rules that disqualify potential buyers who have had a mortgage in the past from being considered a first-time home buyer in major cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai. If the rules are changed, these buyers could be eligible for a lower down payment and less restrictive borrowing limits. South China Morning Post
Circular New Hampshire Home, a Former Water Storage Tank, Lists for Nearly $850,000
A circular house in Dover, New Hampshire, that once served to store water for a nearby estate has hit the market for $849,900. The converted brick building dates to 1865, when it was used as a water tank for wealthy entrepreneur Jonathan Sawyer’s Dover mansion. The three-bedroom residence now boasts a custom kitchen, an office with built-ins, hardwood floors, exposed ceiling beams and brick interior walls, as well as secret doorways and a private basement bar. Canada’s Population and Home Prices Are Both Expected to Keep Growing
Canada’s fast-growing population is one factor adding to rising home prices, according to recent analysis by Zoocasa, a Canadian property portal. For 14 out of the last 18 years, national home price growth has outpaced population growth by a significant margin, often doubling or even tripling the population growth rate. And that isn’t likely to change soon, with Zoocasa predicting home prices and population growth are likely to continue their upward trajectory, particularly in major metropolitan areas like Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary.
