Prince Harry has revealed he was once so fond of bagging a designer bargain at his local branch of T K Maxx that he developed ‘a system’ to ensure he got the best deals.
Writing in his bombshell memoir Spare, which was released globally on Tuesday, the Duke of Sussex, 38, will leave fans perhaps a little surprised that a member of the royal family might once have been rifling through the racks at the popular cut-price store.
Harry, who yesterday appeared on The Late Show in the US with Stephen Colbert, reveals in the book that he liked T K Maxx, known as T J Maxx across the pond, because there were often discounted garments from brands such as J Crew and Gap.
The High Street Kensington branch of the chain is just a few minutes’ walk from Kensington Palace, including Nottingham Cottage, the home Prince Harry shared with Meghan Markle from 2017 to 2019.

Prince Harry reveals in Spare, released on Tuesday, that he frequently used to hit up his local T K Maxx to pick up bargains on brands such as Gap and J Crew (The Prince pictured in casual attire in 2013 at the High Street Kensington branch of T K Maxx)
The prince describes in the book how while clothes for formal functions were covered by an allowance given to him by his father, his more casual attire was down to him to purchase.
He writes: ‘For my everyday casual clothes I’d go to TK Maxx, the discount store. I was particularly fond of their once-a-year sale, when they’d be flush with items from Gap or J.Crew, items that had just gone out of season or were slightly damaged. If you timed it right, got there on the first day of the sale, you could snag the same clothes that others were paying top prices for down the high street!’
He then describes how he developed a system to optimise his chances of going home with a bargain.
Harry says he would methodically check each rack, garment by garment, would never try anything on and if he liked the look of something he would put it in the store’s ‘red bucket’ basket.
Before moving into Nottingham Cottage with Meghan, the Prince lived in a one-bedroom modest apartment in Kensington Palace, with shopping street High Street Kensington on his doorstep.

In a pre-recorded interview which aired in the US last night, Prince Harry accused the monarchy of trying to ‘undermine’ his explosive memoir Spare because its controversial contents have ‘perhaps made them feel uncomfortable and scared’ as he launched another furious attack on the royal family in the latest in a line of TV interviews to promote his book.
The 38-year-old held nothing back as he took aim at his family during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, where he lurched between hurling more barbs at his family and making light-hearted jokes including about his ‘frost-nipped’ genitals while swigging a glass of tequila.
Harry also took part in a skit with Tom Hanks and clinked glasses with Colbert as he praised America as a ‘great place to live’ and said how much he loves ‘beautiful California’, sparking cheers from the audience. He whipped up the crowd on several occasions, offering them all some tequila and talking about his Army career, asking: ‘Are there any veterans in the house?’
One of the more serious moments during the lengthy sit-down saw Harry rounding on his relatives over the backlash to his memoir, with Colbert questioning whether he believes the royals have an ‘active campaign to undermine this book’.

Prince Harry has sensationally accused the monarchy of trying to ‘undermine’ his explosive memoir Spare because its controversial contents have ‘perhaps made them feel uncomfortable and scared’
‘Of course,’ the duke responded – adding that ‘the British Press’ has also been complicit in the ‘campaign’, with Colbert chiming in: ‘But aided and abetted by the Palace.’
‘Again of course,’ Harry confirmed. ‘But this is the other side of the story, right? After 38 years, they have told their side of the story. This is the other side of the story.’
The father-of-two then suggested that what he perceives as the royals’ ‘campaign’ against his memoir has come as a result of them being ‘uncomfortable and scared’ over its contents.
‘There is a lot in there that, perhaps, makes people feel uncomfortable and scared,’ he continued.
The wide-ranging interview with Colbert saw Harry address a number of topics ranging from the farcical to the furious, with the duke launching several tirades against the British Press – accusing it of ‘abusing’ his wife Meghan and bizarrely suggesting that it was ’embarrassing’ for the media when he chose to quit the Royal Family and relocate to the US.
