MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – The first meeting of the Belarusian People’s Congress is to be held no later than 25 April 2024, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko told reporters, BelTA has learned.
“By 1 October the Central Election Commission should form 110 parliamentary constituencies. Constituencies for the elections to local councils should be formed by 1 November. No later than 23 November the head of state should issue a decree to call the elections on the single voting day. As far as the number of voters is concerned, we proceed from the principle of equality of representation and use the population register to determine this number,” Igor Karpenko said.
The upcoming electoral campaign will be nothing like the previous ones, as deputies of all levels will be elected: from deputies of rural councils, district and city councils up to deputies of the House of Representatives, the head of the CEC noted. “Thus, voters will get several ballots depending on their place of residence. For example, if a person lives in a rural area, he/she will usually receive four ballots. Voters living in Minsk will get two ballots: one for the elections to the House of Representatives and the other one for the elections to the Minsk City Council of Deputies,” he informed.
“It is worth mentioning that after the completion of this important electoral campaign, we will have about 60 days to hold orientation sessions for the Councils of Deputies of all levels, to nominate candidates and elect members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly. And after that we will proceed to the Belarusian People’s Congress, i.e. we will elect delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress from among deputies of local councils and members of civil society structures. We will have about 60 days for that. The first meeting of the Belarusian People’s Congress should be held no later than 25 April 2024,” added Igor Karpenko.
