A Chinese restaurant honoring Singapore’s delicacies and style unfortunately missed a few steps, according to a patron who stumbled upon it.
At a “Singapore-styled” restaurant in Beijing, waitresses were dressed in uniforms similar to iconic Singapore Airlines duds and served dishes badly mistranslated on the menu.
“A Singapore-styled restaurant in Beijing with waitresses dressed in Singapore Airlines uniform, with awful English translations in their menu,” Facebooker Arthur Pang wrote today of his discovery.
Photos of the menu from the Borderless restaurant had many spelling errors like “Beef Remdamg,” “Singapore Barbegue Pore” and literal translation fails like “Grasp the sand bone” for a rib dish. Its “Tauhu Goreng,” which was supposed to be a fried tofu dish, was labeled as Sambal Kangkong, or water spinach.
Others included the “Scalded Romaine Lettuce” for a bowl of broccoli with ice cubes, “Singapore Shrimp Cake” as prawn crackers, and “Singapore Fried Bee Hoon” for a plate of fried rice.
According to Pang, the restaurant was run and managed by local Chinese. Singapore Airlines did not immediately respond to Coconut’s request for comment.
The staff was in different colored uniforms that had similar motifs as the Singapore Girl sarong kebaya uniform designed by Parisian couturier Pierre Balmain in 1968.
