QT Newcastle is the first regional hotel in the group’s portfolio. The 104-room hotel is located in Newcastle’s East End precinct in a former David Jones building on Hunter Street Mall. The heritage property has been gently revitalised with the interior design elements we expect from the edgy, usually city-based accommodation.
It’s the 11th hotel for QT. Each one has quirky art and design elements, some have on-site spas, and their food and drink offerings are usually a big drawcard. At QT Newcastle, there’s a rooftop bar with water views and a modern Australian restaurant, both led by executive chef Massimo Speroni, who comes from Brisbane restaurant Bacchus, part of the Rydges South Bank hotel.
Speroni has worked at Michelin-starred Italian restaurants San Domenico and Cafe les Paillotes, and he’ll be bringing those fine-dining skills to the local-produce-driven menu at Jana. There’s an on-site dry-aged meat cabinet, an open kitchen and a premium selection of steaks. Almost all of the produce will come from New South Wales farmers and producers.
Upstairs at Rooftop at QT, find a comprehensive selection of sake, plum liqueur umeshu and what’s promised to be Newcastle’s largest selection of Japanese whisky. The izakaya-style menu, created by Speroni, features dishes such as salmon sashimi, yakitori chicken and miso eggplant robata skewers.
The colourful rooms and suites feature brushed brass, industrial textures, and views of the water or the nearby Newcastle cathedral. For a rockstar experience, book the Clock Suite for uninterrupted harbour views. It gets its name from the building’s dome and clock face, which is the suite’s centrepiece. It’s been restored to its former glory and sits above the room’s oversized bathtub that’s surrounded by pretty emerald green tiles.
The hotel is part of a $700 million investment into the East End precinct by development group Iris Capital. There are also two more QT hotels in the works, one in Parramatta and one in Adelaide, opening in 2023.
QT Newcastle, Jana and Rooftop at QT is now open.
