China’s health-conscious female consumers are satiating their hunger with superfoods that offer maximum nutritional benefits for minimal calories.
Globally, the superfood market reached a value of $152.71 billion in 2021 and will top $214.95 billion by 2027, according to market research company Mordor Intelligence.
China is a growing market for the superfood industry – part of a broader health food business. The country’s health food sales were RMB250.3 billion ($282.9 million) in 2020 and reached RMB298 billion ($338 million) in 2022, according to a report from Guangzhou-born iiMedia Research.
Guangzhou-based start-up entrepreneur Maggie Peng brought back the healthy-eating concept from the US and shared her favorite superfoods with consumers on Alibaba Group’s online marketplace Taobao and Tmall.
“If a brand is unique enough and the owner is determined enough, it’s easy for Taobao consumers to spot its shining points,” said Peng.
