A welcome sign of Bali’s continuing recovery is news of the reopening on 01 April 2022 of The Bumbu Bali Restaurant and Cooking School on Jalan Pratama on Tanjung Benoa.
The restaurant its the sister restaurant – the popular Art Café Bumbu Bali on Jalan Siligita in Nusa Dua – long acknowledged as Bali’s leading venue for authentic Balinese cooking.
While many restaurants were compelled to hibernate during the nearly two-year global pandemic, the two family-run restaurants operated by Heinz Von Holzen, his wife Puji, and their son, Fabian, took a bold, forward-looking view. While maintaining operations at Café Bumbu Bali, the Bumbu Bali Restaurant and Cooking School decided to close for six months for a total renovation and makeover starting 13 January 2021.
Under the thoughtful guidance of Architect Walter Wagner and The Habitat Team, every area of the Bumbu Bali was upgraded. The 6-month renovation program has resulted in a pleasing new look without sacrificing the traditional Balinese charm that reflects the family business’s unwavering commitment to honoring authentic Balinese cuisine.
Taking a bottom-up approach, all floorings throughout the restaurant have been replaced, and two new dining pavilions to serve the many small groups and celebrations that flock to the popular eatery. The restaurant’s teaching kitchens are still there, ready to welcome a steady stream of “foodies” eager to join the hands-on learning experience provided in Balinese cooking classes.
In addition to the main dining room, Bumbu Bali Restaurant and Cooking School on Jalan Pratama now has five break-out venues:
· Anggerek – 28 diners
· Bougainvillea – 28 diners
· Frangipani (Alfresco) – 12 diners
· Cempaka (air-conditioned) – 16 diners
· Hibiscus Bar – 7 people
Balinese dishes, gathered over more than two decades of dedicated exploration by chef-photographer Heinz Von Holzen, have resulted in a series of “must-have” award-winning cookbooks and an ever-evolving menu of Balinese foods so diverse that leaves even Balinese cooks awe-struck. The signature dishes at the Art Café and Bumbu Bali Restaurant include a Balinese Rijsttafel, Nasi Campur, succulent satays, roast duck in banana leaf, and the quintessentially Balinese celebratory Bali Guling.
With highly affordable menu prices, Bumbu Bali Restaurant also extends corkage fees that facilitate further savings. Corkage fees are Rp. 50,000 for wines; Rp. 75,000 for Champagnes; and Rp.100,000 for bottles of alcohol.
Both restaurants are open for lunch from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm (last order at 3:00 pm). Dinner is served from 6:00 pm until 11:00 pm (last order at 10:00 pm).
