Butter chicken, one of India’s best-known dishes globally, is apparently also its most contentious, with two Indian restaurant chains grappling in court over who exactly invented it.
The lawsuit was brought by the family behind Moti Mahal, a famed Delhi restaurant brand that has counted late U.S. President Richard Nixon and India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru among its guests. It claims its founder created the curry in the 1930s and in a 2,752-page court filing it accuses rival chain Daryaganj of falsely claiming to have invented the dish as well as dal makhani, a popular lentil delight that is also laden with butter and cream.

The Florida Bar gave lawyers some clarity on how they can use artificial intelligence without running afoul of ethics rules, following a similar move by the California Bar in November.
Bar associations in at least six other states are examining how lawyers can use the emerging technology responsibly, including in New York. Since June, several federal judges have said lawyers must disclose when they have used AI in matters that appear on their dockets.
And, a growing number of startups are launching tools and raising capital as the legal sector explores ways to capitalize on generative AI. Spellbook, a legal software company that has developed a generative AI contract drafting and review tool, said today it raised $20 million in a Series A funding round led by a Montreal-based venture capital firm.

Carl Icahn asked a Delaware judge on Tuesday to reconsider a Jan. 16 decision that barred the activist investor from using confidential information obtained from an Illumina board member in a breach of duty lawsuit against directors of the embattled gene sequencing company. The director who gave Icahn the privileged info is an Icahn employee who won his Illumina board seat in a brutal proxy contest waged by Icahn. The activist investor insists those facts put him inside the board’s “circle of confidence.” A Chancery judge held otherwise last week, but Icahn’s new motion says the judge misunderstood key facts. Alison Frankel has the story.
