Calgary’s Luxury Home Market Bucked National Slow Down Last Year
Many of Canada’s major luxury housing markets plateaued last year, but that wasn’t the case in Calgary. “Calgary has a beacon of economic strength and, in turn, led all major luxury markets across Canada last year for growth,” said Don Kottick, president and chief executive officer of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada. “And it looks like it will continue this year.” Home sales over C$1 million (US$741,645) in the city grew 13% annually last year, and ultra-luxury homes worth C$4 million or more grew 50% in the same time. U.S. Homeowners Are Staying Put for 12 Years on Average
The typical homeowner in the U.S. is now spending 11.9 years in their home, almost double the average of 6.5 years from two decades ago, according to Redfin data. Time spent in the same home peaked just before the pandemic-driven housing frenzy in 2020 at 13.4 years. This increase in homeowner tenure is largely fueled by older Americans staying in place for longer—nearly 40% of baby boomers have lived in their current homes for at least 20 years, and another 16% have spent 10 to 19 years in the homes they currently own. As for Gen Xers, 35% have lived in the same home for at least 10 years. World Property Journal
