Inter Miami CF midfielder Edison Azcona and Inter Miami CF II defender Israel Boatwright, both Club Academy products, have been called up by the Dominican Republic for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The 23rd edition of the tournament will run from May 20 to June 11 in Argentina.
The tournament will pit 24 countries from six different confederations against each other. Teams will be separated into six groups of four, with the top two teams in each group and the four best third-place finishers advancing to the knockout rounds.
The Dominican Republic will compete in Group D at the tournament alongside Brazil, Italy and Nigeria.
Dominican Republic Group Stage Schedule
Azcona and Boatwright made history with the team a year ago, helping their country reach the final of the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship, earning the Dominican Republic’s first-ever qualifications for a FIFA U-20 World Cup and the Summer Olympics. Azcona captained the side throughout the tournament, while the competition saw Boatwright make his debut and net his first goal for the Dominican Republic.
Azcona, 19, has made four appearances for Inter Miami CF II this season, all starts, scoring one goal in the process. The Homegrown Academy product also has five MLS appearances under his belt since 2021.
Boatwright, 17, has also started four matches for Inter Miami CF II in 2023. In 2022, the defender made his professional debut for Inter Miami CF II and scored his first professional goal.
