Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner has secured his third signing of the January transfer window with the loan arrival of Charlton Athletic midfielder Conor McGrandles.
With long-term injuries to both Adam May and Liam O’Neil, midfield has been an area of the pitch where United have been lacking in numbers for much of the campaign.
However, Bonner has now moved to address that shortage with the addition of McGrandles, who started his career north of the border with his hometown club Falkirk before turning out for Norwich City, MK Dons and Lincoln City.
The 27-year-old joined fellow Sky Bet League One side Charlton in the summer and he has gone on to make 12 appearances in all competitions prior to linking up with the U’s.
McGrandles, who scored against United last season in Lincoln’s 5-1 win at the Abbey Stadium, said: “I am happy to be here. It’s been a challenging few months for myself and the team but I am hopeful that we can push forward together now and make it a really good end to the season.
“I have had a nice welcome and I appreciate the opportunity, so it’s down to me now to repay the manager’s faith by getting into the team and putting in good performances that help us pick up results.”
Meanwhile, Bonner added: “Conor is an energetic midfield player who can get around the pitch, help us regain the ball and link our attacking play. His qualities will make us a better team and we are delighted he is here to help us.
“His experience at this level will be invaluable and he joins ready to impact the team and is enthused by the challenge of the season.
“We have long admired his qualities having played against him in previous seasons and I am looking forward to working with him having been impressed by his eagerness to join us.”
