A penthouse apartment in Sydney that’s in a serious state of disrepair is on the market with a price guide of A$10 million (US$6.47 million). The three-bedroom unit is described in its listing as a “black canvas,” and while some rooms appear complete, others have exposed brickwork, visible scaffolding, exposed pipes and holes in the walls. The almost 3,200-square-foot penthouse is within a building built in 1881, and plenty of the property’s old-world charm can still be found, such as arched windows, high ceilings and grand proportions. The recent demolition of the mid-century Zimmerman House by Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, is a prime example of a systematic problem, according to Liz Waytkus, executive director of Docomomo US, a non-profit dedicated to the conservation of buildings. The celebrity couple razed the L.A. home, designed by architect Craig Ellwood in 1950, in order to make room for a new mansion. “The land has become more valuable than the house, and even if people understand the value of such a home, location and land value often trump architectural significance,” Waytkus said. French Town Selling House for €1
The small town of Saint-Amand-Montrond in France is selling a home for €1 (US$1.07) in a move to help reduce the number of vacant homes and revitalize the area. The headline-grabbing sale method has already been utilized in other parts of Europe. The two-bedroom house requires a renovation, which the town estimates will cost the buyer $136,180. The new owner should also be prepared to eventually relocate to Saint-Amand-Montrond. CNBC
