Bali, the ever-popular Indonesian holiday island in the Java Sea, has long attracted visitors who come to marvel at its crumbly temples, hippy villages and black-sand beaches (emblazoned with cracking sunsets). The island’s reliance on international tourism has made for a challenging two years — it’s been largely closed to outside visitors since the pandemic began in March 2020. Just 45 international tourists arrived between January to October 2021 — a far cry from the nine million who landed on its shores in 2019.
In March 2022, it reopened to international tourism as part of a pilot scheme to welcome visitors back.
Here’s everything you need to know about entry requirements, pre-departure testing and regulations on the ground in Indonesia.

The complicated entry requirements to Bali were dropped from April 5.
Visitors from 23 countries — including the UK — can enter Bali without quarantine and without applying for a visa in advance if they’re fully vaccinated, with the last dose being administered more than 14 days prior.
Travellers need to show a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of departure for Bali, and present a vaccine certificate. They no longer need to show a confirmed accommodation booking for at least four days of their stay.
Visitors will also need to fill out an online health declaration.
On arrival, all visitors are subject to a health check, and if they have a temperature or display symptoms of Covid-19, must take an additional PCR test.
The Indonesian islands of Bintan and Batam, both close to Singapore, are following similar opening procedures, but they are far less popular with British tourists.
In late March, Indonesia dropped the quarantine requirement for international arrivals, but a test before departure would still be required.
In a word: no. Bali is only open to tourists who have been fully vaccinated.
Masks should be worn inside. Travellers can expect strict Covid protocols such as temperature checks and sanitising stations at hotels.
