Hello.
Country clubs have been a talking point in Singapore, following news that Raffles Town Club’s lease will not be renewed after it expires in 2026. Do country clubs and their sprawling golf courses have a future in land-scarce Singapore?
Trade-offs are necessary when land supply is highly inelastic in Singapore, says NUS Business School’s Sing Tien Foo. This may not bode well for country clubs when they no longer appeal to a new generation of Singaporeans.
Another exit that generated outcry in Singapore is that of bus service 167, which for decades has ferried commuters between the north and downtown. The Land Transport Authority reversed its decision to cease 167’s operations, and will run the service at 30-minute intervals to give commuters time to adjust.
But as MRT lines expand, buses will carry fewer passengers, making them less cost-effective to run, says Singapore University of Social Sciences’ Walter Theseira in a video commentary. Expect more bus services to be cut, shortened or adjusted.
You may have noticed that we’ve been publishing video commentaries since last month. Yvette van der Eijk gave her take on why New Zealand scrapped its generational smoking ban, and in CNA’s inaugural video commentary, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies’ Benjamin Ang spoke about banking disruptions and why they are more than just an inconvenience.
If you like to get your expert insight and analysis in a short, punchy video, this new format is for you.
