Canada were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 after a 3:1 loss to France on Sunday night. Canada fought hard against a highly-rated France team and conceded more goals as an unfortunate outcome of their push to get back into the game. Olivia Smith scored Canada’s lone goal late in added time.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2022 is an important opportunity for Canadian players to gain international youth experience on their path to the Women’s National Team. Canada lost their opener 2:0 to Korea Republic on Thursday and will next face group leaders Nigeria on Wednesday night.
“The kids have taken everything that we have thrown at them and they have grown throughout this tournament, but now they are going to rest and reset to face Nigeria in a few days,” said Cindy Tye, Canada Soccer’s Women’s U-20 National Team Coach. “I have no doubt that they will step forward again when they face Nigeria because I know that they will keep rising and that we will grow again.”

Canada moved the ball well early on and attacked with confidence. Canada created two scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes including a volley from Miya Grant-Clavijo that just sailed wide of the post. France came close to opening the scoring in the 33rd minute but Canadian goalkeeper Anna Karpenko made one of her many saves of the night. Karpenko went on to save the Reds again with a double save in the 45th minute.
France broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Magnaba Folquet’s header went off the crossbar and into the net. France doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Folquet took a shot that was deflected and sent the ball in the opposite direction of Karpenko. Esther Mbakem-Niaro then scored France’s third goal in the 89th minute before the Smith goal in the 96th minute.
Canada will face group leaders Nigeria in their last group match on Wednesday 17 August, with the match again broadcast on TSN. Beyond the group phase, the Quarter-Finals are 20 and 21 August, the Semi-Finals are 25 August, and both the Match for Third Place and Final. Fans will find extended coverage for the Canadian Championship across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube featuring the hashtag #canw20.
