Backgrounder
From Global Affairs Canada
The conflict in South Sudan has had a debilitating effect on the ability of communities to access basic services and meet their most basic food needs. Canada’s announced $86 million in funding will target the most vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
Health Pooled Fund for Saving the Lives of Women and Children
Department for International Development, United Kingdom
$64.5 million over three years
This project is improving access to quality basic health-care services, including family planning and reproductive health, in several regions of South Sudan. The project aims to provide almost 1.4 million children with basic health and nutrition services and to immunize over 250,000 children against common diseases. The project also aims to provide over 120,000 women with prenatal care and protection from malaria and to ensure that over 60,000 pregnant women deliver their babies with the support of a skilled birth attendant.
Food for Work—Community Assets for Recovery and Resilience
World Food Programme
$20 million over three years
This project is increasing food security for 275,000 vulnerable people in South Sudan. It supports the provision of food to women and men and the restoration of farmland for agricultural production, as well as the construction of access roads, small-scale irrigation ponds and hand-dug wells. The project aims to address immediate hunger needs while helping local communities improve agricultural production and stimulate economic growth. The project serves as a safety net for vulnerable South Sudanese communities in food-insecure areas by providing a transition between emergency relief and long-term development, and it will help to prevent families from falling into more acute phases of food insecurity.
Conflict Sensitivity Resource Facility
Department for International Development, United Kingdom
$500,000 over two years
This project is increasing the capacity of organizations to more effectively deliver programming during South Sudan’s conflict. This includes ensuring that development activities complement community peace-building efforts and do not exacerbate conflict.
Food Assistance in Aweil East

$1 million over three months
This allocation from the Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s draw-down fund to World Relief Canada is providing food assistance to approximately 12,800 conflict-affected people and includes the distribution of food vouchers to help households meet their basic food needs at the local market.
