“We were even able to speak to the scammer himself to pose questions like: What led you down this path? How did you learn to scam others? Why did you do what you did?” Clarisse reveals.
Our teammate Chan Luo Er worked on the third episode set in Indonesia, where culture and tradition featured prominently in a scam by charismatic cult leader Dimas Kanjeng. This case involved murder, mystery… and magic.
To date, Dimas Kanjeng still has diehard followers, including the highly educated, who believe in his innocence and await his release. Luo Er recalls: “Our first attempt to film the exterior of Dimas’ compound was a harrowing experience. We were on public property, yet his followers, who have a history of getting violent, came out to question us and film us on their mobile phones. It’s incredible how loyal they remain even though he is a convicted scammer.”
