Cuban and State Department officials have met in Havana to discuss the expansion of consular and visa services on the island. The meeting Wednesday is the latest in a series of friendly exchanges between the two governments, which share a historically icy relationship. Cuba issued a brief statement confirming the meeting took place. The U.S. delegation included Rena Bitter, assistant secretary of state for consular affairs, and Ur Mendoza Jaddou, director of U.S. citizenship and immigration Services. The U.S. Embassy closed in 2017 following a series of health incidents. While a full reopening has yet to be announced, U.S. officials have said visa processing would resume in January.
Voters reelected a Pennsylvania state representative on Tuesday — even though he died last month.
Republican Thomas Kean Jr. wins election to U.S. House in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, beating incumbent Rep. Tom Malinowski.
Republican Tom Kean Jr. has defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski in New Jersey’s 7th District. Kean’s victory comes two years after he narrowly lost to Malinowski and more than two decades after he first sought election to Congress. Malinowski was vying for a third term amid serious headwinds: high inflation, sagging approval of Democratic President Joe Biden’s performance and a redrawn district that favored Republicans. Malinowski cast Kean as too beholden to hard core supporters of former President Donald Trump and warned that if Kean and the GOP won, then Republicans would focus on investigating Biden and stymying any legislative agenda. That strategy faltered.
Lawyers for Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes have rested their case in his Capitol riot trial. That move came after a man described as the far-right extremist group’s “operations leader” for Jan. 6, 2021, told jurors that he never heard anyone discussing plans to storm the building. It’s the sixth week of testimony in the case accusing Rhodes and four co-defendants of a violent plot keep Democrat Joe Biden from the White House. Prosecutors have argued that the Oath Keepers came to Washington intent on stopping Biden from becoming president at all costs and sprang into action when a pro-Donald Trump mob started storming the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says he’s considering additional steps to help make life more affordable for residents, including extending the state’s gas tax holiday beyond its Dec. 1 expiration date. Hours after winning a second term, the Democrat said Wednesday he has asked his budget director to review state gas tax revenues and budget reserves to see what can be done before the General Assembly convenes in January. Inflation and affordability was a key issue in the race for governor. Lamont often pointed to the rough $600 million in tax cuts implemented earlier this year, including the gas tax holiday. His opponent, Bob Stefanowski, argued more cuts are needed.
Idaho Republicans have maintained their hold in the deeply conservative state Tuesday by retaining all statewide offices, a U.S. Senate seat, both seats in the U.S. House and supermajorities in both chambers of the Statehouse. Republican Gov. Brad Little easily won a second term, former U.S. Rep. Raúl Labrador will be the new attorney general, Ada County Clerk Phil McGrane will become the new secretary of state and House Speaker Scott Bedke will become the new lieutenant governor. Voters also approved a nonbinding resolution asking if they agreed with a massive tax cut and education spending bill lawmakers passed in a one-day special session in September that Little signed.
Black and Hispanic professors at Florida International University have slammed the university administration for allowing former President Mark Rosenberg to return to campus as a professor in the spring, after he resigned in January amid a harassment scandal.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Navy fired the commanding officer of a Norfolk-based warship Tuesday in the middle of its deployment amid a criminal investigation.
A New York appellate court judge says former President Donald Trump’s company can’t avoid an independent monitor’s oversight while it appeals a court’s decision to require an outside watchdog. Angela Mazzarelli, an associate justice on the state’s mid-level appeals court, rejected the Trump Organization’s request for a stay — a legal mechanism that would’ve halted the monitoring requirement while it pursues an appeal. Mazzarelli said a full panel of appellate judges would take up the issue at a hearing on Nov. 28. In the meantime, Manhattan Judge Arthur Engoron is free to appoint a monitor and put that person to work keeping tabs on Trump’s vast real estate empire, restricting the company’s ability to freely make deals, sell assets and change its corporate structure.
A day after the midterm elections, misinformation about the results is zeroing in on the states of Arizona and Pennsylvania. In Arizona, most of the misleading claims now circulating online began after problems emerged Tuesday with voter tabulation machines in Maricopa County. In Pennsylvania, baseless allegations are spreading about delays in vote counting. Misinformation experts say it’s not unusual for voting irregularities or delays to be spun into rumors. Overall, however, few problems were reported Tuesday and threats of political violence did not materialize.
A group of American friends found dead inside an Airbnb in Mexico City last month likely died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to local authorities.
Margins between Democrats and Republicans narrowed considerably Wednesday in key Arizona races. Election officials have been chipping away at counting more than half a million mail ballots returned on Election Day and shortly before. Democrats maintained small but dwindling leads in key races for U.S. Senate, governor, secretary of state and attorney general, while Republicans were optimistic the late-counted ballots would break heavily in their favor, as they did in 2020. It could take several days before it’s clear who won some of the closer contests. With Republicans still in the hunt, it remained unclear whether the stronger-than-expected showing for Democrats would extend to Arizona.
The stage is set for either unprecedented bipartisanship or major gridlock in New Hampshire, where unofficial election results show an almost even divide in the 400-member House. The House clerk’s unofficial tally shows 203 Republican winners and 197 Democrats. Control of the House has flipped in six of the last nine elections, most recently in 2020 when Republicans gained a 26-vote majority. In contrast, their largest advantage was during the 2011-12 session, when they held nearly three-quarters of the seats. The Associated Press has not called many of Tuesday’s races, and recounts are likely.
A Syrian refugee has been sentenced to 17 years and four months in what authorities said was a plot to plot to bomb a Christian church in Pittsburgh. Twenty-four-year-old Mustafa Mousab Alowemer, 24, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty last year to attempting to provide material support and resources to the Islamic Stage group, a militant extremist organization. Authorities said he had detailed plans in 2019 to bomb the Legacy International Worship Center, a small Christian church on the city’s North Side. He apologized in court saying he understood the severity of his crime. He said, “I no longer think or act the way I used to.”
The drama over the outcome of New York’s governor’s race was prolonged into the wee hours of election night, when the home county of one of it’s contenders found itself scrambling to makes its tallies public amid lingering concerns over a cyber attack two months ago. But in the end, officials in Suffolk County were relieved to learn that its election night woes weren’t because of another attack by nefarious hackers but something more innocent: slow Wi-Fi. Suffolk County, located on the eastern flank of Long Island, is home base for GOP U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin, who unsuccessfully tried to oust incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul from the governor’s mansion.
State Rep. Rick Becker was easily defeated in his bid for U.S. Senate. But Becker says he still considered Election Day a victory. He claims at least six candidates who share his far-right philosophy won election, though he wouldn’t name them. Becker says that would makeo more than two dozen lawmakers who are more conservative than the rank-and-file Republicans. Moderate Republicans dismissed Becker’s claim of membership, which has never been publicly disclosed.
Democrat Marilyn Strickland wins reelection to U.S. House in Washington’s 10th Congressional District.
A Texas jury has sentenced a woman to death for killing a pregnant woman to take her unborn daughter. Jurors returned with the sentence for 29-year-old Taylor Parker after deliberating for just over an hour, the Texarkana Gazette reported. Parker was convicted on Oct. 3 of capital murder in the 2020 slaying of 21-year-old Reagan Simmons-Hancock. Her baby was cut from her womb and did not survive. Her 3-year-old daughter was at home when her mother was killed on Oct. 9, 2020. Later that morning, Parker claimed she’d just given birth after being pulled over by a state trooper for speeding and driving erratically. The baby, Braxlynn Sage Hancock, was pronounced dead at an Oklahoma hospital.
A Texas judge has refused to throw out statements made to police by the woman accused of killing professional cyclist Moriah “Mo” Wilson and set the case for trial in June 2023. State District Judge Brenda Kennedy said Wednesday police did not violate the rights of suspect Kaitlin Armstrong when they continued to question her even after she asked if she should have an attorney present. The judge determined Armstrong didn’t have a constitutional right to counsel at that point because she was not under arrest. Wilson was found shot to death in Austin in May.
Democrats have bucked historic trends in the midterm elections to win full control of four new state capitols. They won control of the Michigan and Minnesota legislatures in Tuesday’s elections and captured the governor’s offices in Maryland and Massachusetts. That means they now will have full control of state government in all four of those states that previously had divided political power. The gains are notable because the president’s party typically loses legislative seats in midterm elections. Control of several legislative chambers — including Arizona, New Hampshire and Nevada — remains unclear as votes are still being counted.
The outcome of a congressional race in southern New Mexico was too early to call Wednesday as incumbent Rep. Yvette Herrell sought a second term in a district that she flipped to Republican control in 2020. Democratic nominee Gabe Vasquez of Las Cruces was vying for the 2nd Congressional District seat that stretches from the U.S. border with Mexico across desert oilfields of the Permian Basin and portions of Albuquerque on pledges to seek more affordable access to health care, raise the federal minimum wage and protect abortion rights. Democrats won a sweeping mandate in the midterm election with victories in a long list of statewide offices.

Bills coach Sean McDermott says Josh Allen will miss practice because of an injury to his throwing elbow, but the star quarterback could play against the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings this weekend. McDermott wouldn’t reveal the severity of the injury and stuck mostly to an opening statement in which he referred to Allen as being day to day. If Allen can’t play, the Bills would turn one of the NFL’s best offenses over to backup Case Keenum. Allen was hurt in the final minutes of a 20-17 loss to the New York Jets last weekend.
If this Miami Dolphins team earns a playoff berth, you’ll find one of the major reasons in an obvious place, but a place few choose to look.
Nevada’s high-profile contests for governor and Senate are too early to call, and details about outstanding ballots are unclear. Democratic incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt are facing off in a close race alongside Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak and GOP Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo. With an estimated roughly three-quarters of the votes counted Republicans are leading their Democratic opponents by single digits. There are a significant number of mail ballots left to be counted. Election officials will count ballots received until Saturday as long as they were postmarked by Election Day. Officials have said tens of thousands of ballots remain to be counted in Las Vegas’ Clark County.
GOP Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has won a third term, defeating Democrat Mandela Barnes and handing Republicans a chance to take control of the 50-50 Senate.
TAMPA, Fla. — The burly, north-south ball carrier didn’t sidestep Wednesday. When the question arose, Leonard Fournette’s answer resembled many of his recent rushing attempts: a very short burst.

Tim Ream, Haji Wright, Joe Scally and Sean Johnson made the United States’ World Cup roster, while goalkeeper Zack Steffen, winger Paul Arriola and forwards Jordan Pefok and Ricardo Pepi were among those cut. U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter made the long-awaited announcement of the 26-man group that will gather in Qatar for training next week ahead of the World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21. On what figures to be the youngest of the 32 teams by average age, 29-year-old right back DeAndre Yedlin is the only holdover from the 2014 World Cup.
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is bemused by the latest barb from his former coach. Pete Carroll went on the radio this week and in praising quarterback Geno Smith took a potshot at his former star QB. Carroll said one of the reasons for the Seattle Seahawks’ surprising success this year is that Geno Smith is willing to use a wristband to help facilitate play-calling. Carroll said that was something there was resistance to in the past. Wilson responded Wednesday by pointing to all the winning he did in Seattle and said he didn’t think the wristband had anything to do with that success.
LAS VEGAS — The Raiders are 2-6, and their playoff odds have dropped to this: Slim is a slight favorite, and none is a live underdog.

Jurors are expected to start deliberating Thursday in a rape lawsuit against filmmaker Paul Haggis. Closing arguments Wednesday framed dueling narratives about what happened between him and a publicist on a night in 2013. His accuser says she reluctantly agreed to a drink at the Oscar-winning screenwriter’s apartment, then was subjected to unwelcome kisses, forced to perform oral sex and raped as she repeatedly refused. Haggis says he’s fighting a false claim by a show-business publicist who flirted with him for months and was a partner in a consensual encounter, though he says she was hesitant at times.
The Indiana man accused of killing of two teenage girls has requested a public defender in a letter to the court filed because both he and his wife can no longer work. Richard M. Allen wrote in a letter to the Carroll Circuit Court, postmarked Nov. 7, that he did not know how expensive it would be to find an attorney. He cited his incarceration and unspecified threats to his wife’s personal safety as impediments to their employment. The 50-year-old Delphi man is charged with two counts of murder in the slayings of 14-year-old Libby German and 13-year-old Abby Williams on Feb. 13, 2017, outside the north central Indiana city.
