BOSTON (AP) — Celtics forward Grant Williams was suspended for one game without pay for using inappropriate language and “recklessly making contact with” a referee, the NBA said Wednesday.
The league said he will serve the suspension on Friday night when Boston hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash says he wants to see Ben Simmons regain “that joy of playing the game” as the three-time All-Star tries to bounce back after missing all of last season. Simmons hasn’t scored more than seven points in any of Brooklyn’s first four games as the Nets have staggered to a 1-3 start. He had four points nine assists and five rebounds in 28 minutes Wednesday as the Nets fell 110-99 to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Bam Adebayo scored 18 points and the Miami Heat snapped Portland’s four-game winning streak with a 119-98 victory on Wednesday night. Damian Lillard had 22 points for Portland when he came up limping with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter and headed straight for the locker room. He did not return. The Blazers later announced he had a right calf strain. Kyle Lowry and Jimmy Butler each had 17 points for the Heat, who led by as many as 26 points. Six Miami players were in double figures.

Jalen Brunson scored 27 points, hitting the go-ahead basket in overtime, and the New York Knicks beat the Charlotte Hornets 134-131 on Wednesday night. Brunson also had 13 assists and seven rebounds. RJ Barrett scored 22 points, and Julius Randle had 17 for New York, at 3-1 off to its best start in 10 years. Gordon Hayward led Charlotte with 21 points. PJ Washington, Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jalen McDaniels each had 17.
Zach LaVine scored 28 points as the Chicago Bulls held off a third-quarter surge to earn a 124-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Bulls forward DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points to move within seven points of becoming the 50th player in NBA history to reach the 20,000-point mark. The Pacers rallied from a 24-point deficit behind Buddy Hield’s 24 points, including three 3-pointers late in the third quarter that trimmed the Bulls’ lead to four. Bulls forward Patrick Williams added a season-high 10 points, and reserve guard Goran Dragic provided a spark with 13 points and five assists. Nash was ejected for the first time as Nets coach since taking over at the start of the 2020-21 season. Nash was ejected twice during his 18-season playing career. Bobby Portis had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Milwaukee, while Jrue Holiday had 15 points. Kevin Durant scored 33, Kyrie Irving 27 and Royce O’Neale 12 for the Nets.
Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, and reserve guard Jaylen Nowell had 23 points for the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 134-122 win against the San Antonio Spurs. Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points for Minnesota, which bounced back after a 115-106 loss to San Antonio at home Monday. Jalen McDaniels scored 20 points for the Timberwolves, who hit a season-high 20 3-pointers. Keldon Johnson had a team-high 27 points for the Spurs, who were without guards Devin Vassell and Josh Primo due to injuries. Doug McDermott scored 19 points off the bench.
