At the beginning of the summer, we wrote about a new research programme launched by CGI – SEEDS, the Sustainability Exploration Environmental Data Science programme (see CGI launches sustainability research programme). It has been designed, in partnership with the United Nations and local academia, to challenge thinking and practice around sustainability and low carbon business models.
Today, the day after COP27 started in Sharm-El-Sheik, CGI has announced the addition of five additional organisations to the SEEDS programme. It has welcomed the CBI, Ordnance Survey, Planet Labs PBC (provision of daily satellite data), University of Lincoln, and ARC (Agricultural Research Council) South Africa to the initiative to accelerate its efforts to address climate change and strengthen research.
CGI is set to share the process and findings of SEEDS projects as part of COP27, where it is showcasing its Metaverse innovation (see CGI to showcase metaverse innovation at COP27). Those projects include a water project with Ordnance Survey, investigating the role that Earth Observation can play in detecting sewage from space, an agriculture project in South Africa, to positively impact the farming community, and an initiative aimed at reducing energy consumption in data centres that demonstrates energy models, workload characterisation and artificial intelligence. The photo is of Michael Herron, who is representing CGI at COP27 in his role as Executive Global Lead for Net Zero.
We are all set to join CGI in the Metaverse over the next couple of weeks to learn more about how CGI is using the SEEDS platform to enable efficient knowledge exchange between its stakeholders and the success it is already having in developing solutions to support our planet and society as we face climate change.
