Since Luxembourg has terminated its support in Afghanistan, two members of its military corps will now be sent to Iraq.
The mission aims at helping and training local forces for a duration of two years. However, the Chamber commission still has to approve the new operation.
At the same time, Luxembourgish soldiers will remain stationed in Mali, as Minister of Defence François Bausch confirmed to the commission. In contrast to the the French forces that are stationed there, the mission of the Luxembourg Army is not to engage in conflict areas, but to support a UN mission.
Further military operations will be conducted in Lithuania and in Libya. At the moment, two Luxembourgish police officers are also participating in civil missions, one in Kiev, the other in Ramallah.
A total of 28 Luxembourgish soldiers are currently stationed abroad.
