Queen Elizabeth II has died at age 96. The royal family gathered at her bedside in Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Britain’s longest-reigning monarch has been planning for her succession for some time. Members of the royal family, including King Charles III, who until Thursday was the longest-serving heir in British history, have increased their responsibilities as the queen’s health declined.
The latest: King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla are in Belfast to meet with political leaders and hear condolences. Meanwhile, long lines are forming as Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin makes its way to the British capital. Follow our live briefing.
Final journey: The funeral will take place at London’s Westminster Abbey on Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. London time. She is now on her final highly ceremonial journey — about 500 miles from her castle in Scotland to her final resting place in Windsor.
A new era: What sort of monarch will King Charles III be? Different from his mum. That’s almost certain. As king, Charles has said he wants to balance tradition and progress.
Looking forward: With the queen’s death on Thursday, Britain’s new Elizabethan age is over, replaced by a moment of uncertainty and questions about the future.
