Norwich City defender Max Aarons is expected to return to training later on Monday after sitting out England Under-21s’ 2-0 win over Israel with a cold which sealed top spot in Group C.
Aarons was a notable absentee for the Young Lions’ on Sunday, following his start in the opening 2-0 group win over Czechia at the finals in Georgia and Romania.
The City full back, who was linked with a £10m move to Fulham ahead of the tournament as he enters the final 12 months of his Carrow Road deal, is poised to be back in Lee Carsley’s plans for the midweek group finale against holders Germany following a cold.
Both Aarons and sporting director Stuart Webber have indicated this summer could be right to part ways after 200 senior appearances in green and yellow.
“I do feel it’s the right time for me now to pursue that next chapter, he said last month, following from Webber’s comments in a round of post-season media. “I’m highly ambitious as a player to go play at the highest level. I’ve got aspirations of playing for the England senior team and in the Premier League and I do need to take that next step to be able to do that.”
Three Lions’ chief Gareth Southgate was in attendance for Sunday’s qualifying win and Carsley believes there is more to come.
“The result was really important for us, we spoke about it beforehand, making sure we performed and we spoke about mentality and having that ability to find a way to win,” he told Uefa.com
“We knew it would be a tough game, Israel don’t score many goals but don’t concede many either. It was a good performance, but there is a lot more to come from this team.”
Newcastle wide player Anthony Gordon’s header put them in front in the 15th minute, before Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe doubled the lead in the second half.
Carsley can also call on Aston Villa’s highly-rated Jacob Ramsey, older brother of former City loanee Jacob, and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.
England’s last win at this age group level in the tournament came back in 1984. The Young Lions’ last appearance in the final came when they were hammered by their German counterparts 4-0 in 2009 under Stuart Pearce.
That England squad included Mark Noble, James Milner and Theo Walcott but were no match for a German squad who could call on future World Cup winners Manuel Neuer and Mesut Ozil.
