Celebrate 80 years of Cambridge music legend Colin Hazell at the Cambridge Junction on Friday February 10.
Performing on the night will be some of the bands that he’s regularly done guest spots with on his trusty, though rusty, tambourine. Where it all started with The Frigidaires, through to Colonel Hathi, Hollowstar and playing as recently as November with BIG 10.
If you went to a Cambridge gig in the 70s and 80s, Colin put up the poster that first informed you of the gig and, more than likely, was the first face to greet you at the door when you arrived (and cleared up your mess afterwards).
In the 70s and 80s, he worked as a doorman at The Corn Exchange, Fisher Hall, Sea-cadets hall, and Folk Festival and into the 90s Cambridge Rock Festival and Cambridge Junction as a steward and also appearing onstage, tambourine in hand, with all the drum ‘n’ bass legends at Warning ‘til 6 in the morning.
Some Cambridge bands in the 80s only got to play in other cities because Colin hired the council’s minibus and drove them there. All this whilst still fulfilling many different volunteer positions at Wesley Methodist Church.
Legend has it that he would get paid by some of the promoters to fly-post the city at night and then, a few days later, as part of his street cleaner job for the council, be paid to take the posters down by day. A phone call later from the promoters would start the cycle again.
There will be a book in the foyer for guests to pass on their best wishes and to remind Colin of any funny stories.
The party starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £12.50.
