Over the weekend, the extended MIT community gathered to celebrate with the Institute’s 18th president, Sally Kornbluth. Inauguration festivities continue today with an official ceremony, an academic symposium, and an evening concert.

Chasing carbon zero // NOVA

Professor Yet-Ming Chiang discusses his research aimed at closing gaps in renewable energy availability when there’s no sun or wind. Through their company, Form Energy, Chiang and William Woodford PhD ’13 have developed iron-air batteries that can store electricity for up to 100 hours. “This is something that just a few years ago was considered impossible,” Chiang explains.

Pill that zaps stomach cells could treat nausea and lack of appetite // New Scientist

MIT researchers have developed a non-invasive capsule the size of a raisin that electrically stimulates stomach cells, and could one day be used to “treat nausea, vomiting and lack of appetite in people with eating disorders, or those receiving treatments for cancer.”

9–10:45 a.m., Samberg Conference Center (tickets required) and online | Academic Symposium: Where Big Ideas Come From — And Why They Matter

An all-MIT faculty panel shares their exciting research along with their own experiences with creative breakthroughs.

3–4:30 p.m., Killian Court (no tickets required) and online | Inauguration Ceremony

Delegates from the worldwide academic community will join MIT faculty, students, staff, alumni, and trustees in the procession. Attendees will enjoy musical performances by MIT artists as the Institute welcomes and inaugurates its 18th president. A community reception will immediately follow.

8–10 p.m., Swraj Paul Theater at Kresge Auditorium (tickets required) | Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin: Together In Concert

MIT welcomes singer-songwriters Marc Cohn and Shawn Colvin for a night of songs and stories to close the inauguration festivities.
