Since humble beginnings as a streetside warung back in 1998, Indonesian eatery Ria has become a fixture across South-East Asia, expanding into Singapore in 2004, followed by Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong, and then Melbourne in 2013.
Having celebrated 10 years in Australia, Ria has finally made its way west – softly opening their Vic Park store back on May 18.
Although they’ve opened with a more limited menu to start things off, the heavy hitters are all there – including their namesake ayam penyet, a smashed, crispy chicken served with a sprinkle of golden, spiced crumbs and fiery sambal.
You’ll also find plenty of grilled goodies, including temptingly sticky, caramelised beef ribs or succulent sticks of chicken satay – or dive into a plate of crispy fish dumplings. As the weather cools, we’re also eyeing off a big comforting bowl of soto betawi, a coconut beef soup served with crisp melinjo crackers.
