An electric bike and scooter shop in Derby city centre will be closing down early next month after just over two years of trading. Pure Electric opened its doors in the former Cycle Republic store at Bradshaw Retail Park, in London Road, in June 2020.
A branch opened in nearby Nottingham on the very same day. But the Somerset-based firm has now confirmed both stores will be shutting for good soon.
The Derby branch will close its doors for the final time on Tuesday, September 6. A closing down sale began yesterday, Thursday, August 11, with 25% or more off all e-bikes available in-store.

The Derby and Nottingham stores took over from the Cycle Republic brand, which was owned by Halfords, and employed 15 members of staff who were former Cycle Republic employees. Pure Electric took over 11 stores in total nationwide, with others based in cities including Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.
But most of these stores will now be closing as the retailer looks to move away from e-bike sales and focus exclusively on e-scooters. Explaining the reasons behind the upcoming closures, a Pure Electric spokeswoman said: “Pure Electric was founded on the ambition to address the environmental and social issues of traditional transport systems in urban environments.
"Over the last three years, we’ve built a pan-European business centred around our award-winning e-scooters. In 2019, the business took on 11 Cycle Republic stores across the UK, growing the retail estate further and expanding into e-bikes.
"More recently, we also partnered with FNAC and Darty in France, opening an additional 180 points of distribution. To maintain our trajectory towards delivering our mission, it’s vital that our business remains focused on the areas that will generate the most significant impact.
"To enable this, we’ve decided to focus exclusively on Pure branded e-scooters, growing our eCommerce channel, and continuing to build our offering through strategic retailer partners. We will also be moving away from e-bikes and have made the tough decision to close the majority of our retail stores.
"Neither are easy choices, although, in order to move forward and deliver our goals, we’re compelled to embrace change. In the immediate term, our main focus is to support those team members affected by the changes as we move through this pivotal period for the business.
"Providing a best-in-class experience for our community of riders remains a top priority and customers can continue to find us online via pureelectric.com. Our Rider Support Team is accessible through our website and social media channels and is on hand for support with warranties, repairs, servicing, or any other queries.”
Up until its closure early next month, the Derby store will be open Monday to Saturday between 9am and 6pm, and will be closed on Sundays. An exact closing date has been announced for the nearby Nottingham branch as September 27.
