The democratic values we all believe in and cherish seem to shaken each day. Whether it’s press freedom coming repeatedly under attack, or war and destruction affecting everything from global security concerns to the economy, we appear to be surrounded by crises.
However, we can also each do our part in changing that narrative and flipping the script — by looking inward and reflecting on the very journalistic values we all hold dear. Above all, remain impartial and objective rather than allowing sensationalist headlines to drag you down a rabbit hole.
Here are some further tips on how to keep your head above water.
First, listen to those who are suffering the consequences of the events that make the news. DW’s Jovana Kastratovic and Sertan Sanderson do exactly that in our new podcast series Echoes of War, in which they give Ukrainian and Russian journalists a platform to share their experiences of the war — both at work and at home.
Second, make sure you fight agents of disinformation wherever you go. DW’s Sophie Kirby spoke to Nobel Peace laureate Maria Ressa on how journalists can fight fake news and propaganda on social media and beyond.
