While the festive season brings a lot of joy, there is a bit of madness that can slip in too.
Whether it’s a faceoff with another car at the local shopping centre, receiving slightly more passive-aggressive replies to emails or texts, or rolling your eyes at the person throwing a tanty because they’re waiting longer than usual for their coffee, it can be a trying time.
Being able to escape the manic energy is key, even if it’s just a quick dip or stroll.
Or, if you’re looking for a spot for a Christmas catch-up with friends, Lotus in Highgate is the perfect oasis amongst the hustle and bustle.
Sitting within The Beaufort, the massive multi-venue space that opened earlier this year that quickly became the weekend go-to for people of all ages, Lotus is its more refined dining space.
Serving up a long and very tempting-sounding modern Asian menu, it’s been the first time in a while that I felt stuck on what to order as each dish sounded better than the next.
So we could try more, we decided to go for small or medium dishes, but there is plenty in the large section that I’ll be going back for.
The steamed prawn dumping with soy and black vinegar caramel was the best version of this combo that I’ve had this year ($10). They were plump and so fresh, though personal preference, I would have loved the sauce to be slightly thicker.
Spiced chicken larb with cos lettuce, chilli, lemongrass, mint, and Thai basil ($18) was a flavour explosion of fragrant herbs with a good kick of spice with each bite.
Peppered beef tataki, Korean black bean dressing and pickled cucumber ($24) was another spicy and moreish dish that paired well with the thin slices of cooling pickled cucumber.
The only miss for us within the impressive line-up was the roasted Brussel sprouts with hot and sour vinegar, puffed rice, coriander and chilli oil ($18). It had all of the bits and pieces to make it an amazing dish, but the sprouts were crunchy and undercooked.
Service was very quick and friendly, and the food came out in great time too, despite how busy they were.
So whether it’s grabbing a delicious bite here, or finally turning on your out-of-office, I hope you find a moment of peace amongst the madness.
