U.S. judge refuses to block venture capital fund’s grants for Black women

U.S. District Judge Thomas Thrash rejected a bid by Edward Blum, the anti-affirmative action activist behind the successful U.S. Supreme Court challenge to race-conscious college admissions policies, to bar a small venture capital fund from awarding grants to businesses run by Black women. Blum is trying to use a Civil War-era law designed to protect formerly enslaved Black people from racial bias to dismantle American corporate diversity programs. The lawsuit is one of three that Blum’s American Alliance for Equal Rights had filed since August challenging grant and fellowship programs designed by the venture capital fund and two law firms to help give Black, Hispanic and other underrepresented minority groups greater career opportunities.

U.S. sues Amazon in landmark monopoly case after four-year probe

The FTC filed a long-anticipated antitrust lawsuit against Amazon on Tuesday, and asked the court to consider forcing the online retailer to sell assets to stop what it said was ongoing harm to consumers. The lawsuit had been expected after years of complaints that Amazon and other tech giants abused their dominance of search, social media and online retailing to become gatekeepers on the most lucrative aspects of the internet. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge John Coughenour, who was nominated to the bench in 1981 by former President Ronald Reagan.
