U.S. jury sides with Ed Sheeran in ‘Let’s Get It On’ copyright trial

Ed Sheeran’s 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud” did not unlawfully copy from Marvin Gaye’s classic 1973 song “Let’s Get It On,” a jury in Manhattan federal court decided on Thursday in a closely watched copyright lawsuit. Read more about the trial.

Two similar lawsuits are pending against Sheeran in Manhattan brought by David Pullman’s Structured Asset Sales LLC, which owns copyright interests in the Gaye song. Sheeran won a trial in London last year in a separate copyright case over his hit “Shape of You.”

Lewis Brisbois chair, executive committee are out after lawyer exodus

Robert Lewis, the founding partner of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, stepped down from his role as chairman of the firm after 110 lawyers departed to join the new firm Barber Ranen this week. Lewis Brisbois will also dissolve its executive committee effective immediately and instead a newly expanded 13-member management committee will oversee the firm. Earlier this year, the firm lost a team of 44 cybersecurity professionals to a rival firm. Firm co-chair Bob Smith said the firm had been considering changes to its management structure before this week. Read more about the restructuring.

When TikTok-famous associates clash with their law firms over paid deals

A big law associate with a huge following on TikTok is offered cash to do a social media post endorsing a brand name product. Will her prestigious, century-old law firm allow the side gig? It may sound like a one-off situation, but Jenna Greene in her latest column reports that associates at Simpson Thacher; Cravath and Morrison & Foerster have wrangled with their firms over this question — with three different outcomes. While saying “no” might be the easiest answer for the firms, Greene writes that it might also be shortsighted.
