Good news from Austria where scientists are looking at how to make microchips more sustainable and you’ll never guess what they’re using.
Actually maybe you will guess because this amazing thing that’s neither plant nor animal comes up so frequently in good news stories, as we say another hello to a mushroom. In this case it’s the Ganoderma Lucidum, or Reishi (or mannentake) mushroom, which grows on dead wood and in maturity grows a beautiful and shiny skin that’s incredibly durable. You can bend and flex it thousands of times and it doesn’t disintegrate.
Scientists at The Jonas Kepler University in Austria have successfully used a piece of mushroom skin the width of a piece of paper to protect microchips from heat with almost the same efficiency as plastic, and they’re saying that as more and more things use microchips, and as we throw more and more of them away, using stuff that’s organic and biodegradable is the most sensible and responsible thing to do.
