TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir asserted that state companies helped to boost the economic recovery, including when the national economy grew 5.44 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2022.
A third of the Indonesian economy, he claimed, was in fact contributed by SOEs, which was reflected in its total assets of around Rp9,000 trillion in 2021, or equal to 53 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).
“SOEs have a role in maintaining people’s purchasing power by providing jobs. They also ensure that public services are maintained in times of crisis,” said Erick in a written statement, Monday, August 8, 2022.
He cited examples that the Balikpapan refinery development master plan (RDMP) project had absorbed 19,000 workers and the downstream coal to dimethyl ether (DME) project absorbed 10,000 workers.
“In addition, SOEs open up business opportunities and encourage MSMEs, including the development of Benoa Port as a Bali Maritime Tourism Hub (BMTH) and the development of Bakauheni Harbor City (HBC) which is aimed at supporting the local economy,” the minister explained.
Erick Thohir went on to say that several SOEs also established programs to encourage the people’s economy, such as PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) with its Mekaar program which facilitated the empowerment of women’s MSMEs. The program opened 12.7 million job opportunities for women in 2021 in various regions and is pushed to reach 20 million by 2024.
