TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Urban planning observer from Trisakti University, Nirwono Joga, assessed that Jakarta’s flooding is highly related to its spatial planning. By means, poorly planned urban development is the main factor that triggers flooding in the capital.
“As we observe, flood-prone areas are technically due to spatial problems,” said Nirwono in a discussion on rainy season and the residents’ safety held by the Jakarta City Hall’s press forum at Novotel Cikini, Thursday, October 27, 2022.
According to him, floods that often occur in the capital are not only attributable to heavy rain. The changes in the spatial layout are also among the trigger.
“It can be said that more than 80 percent of Jakarta’s spatial planning is not in accordance with the initial plan,” Nirwono argued.
Places that were originally pointed as water catchment areas, he went on, have now changed functions, be it residential areas or others, so that water can no longer be accommodated in these places.
“The flooding is a logical consequence,” said Nirwono, adding that it will keep happening and harm the city if the urban planning is not improved.
