Fashion Island Hotel Newport Beach will have a new look by summer 2023, following a property acquisition announced earlier this month by Montage International and Eagle Four Partners.
“As local owners, we are thrilled to be the new stewards of the former Fashion Island Hotel at the heart of Newport Beach. We are dedicated to continuously investing in Newport Beach and elevating the hospitality experience of our neighbors and guests,” said Kevin Martin of Eagle Four Partners in a statement.
The hotel will be “transformed” into what the companies are calling Pendry Newport Beach and is expected to include about 295 guestrooms, including 82 suites with floor-to-ceiling windows that will open out to balconies or private patios.
Additionally, the hotel is slated to include three unique lounge, bar and restaurant experiences and a pool. It is also expected to have more than 14,000 square feet of meeting and event space and an 8,710-square-foot ballroom. Health and wellness experiences such as Spa Pendry are also planned.
This will be the third-such brand property in Southern California. Pendry San Diego opened in February 2019 and Pendry West Hollywood opened in April of last year.
“We are grateful to the Irvine Co. for entrusting us with this responsibility and sharing our vision as we collaborate with Montage International to create something extraordinary,” said Kory Kramer of Eagle Four Partners in a statement.
Officials at the company declined to comment on the total cost of the acquisition and did not say when construction is expected to begin.
Fashion Island Hotel — previously known as the Island Hotel until rebranded in 2017 after a remodel — was built in 1986 by the Irvine Co. who owned it, but did not manage it until 2005. It was previously managed by the Four Seasons.
The Irvine Co. closed both the Fashion Island Hotel and Hotel Irvine in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, when the travel and tourism industry was throttled. At the time of the closures, the real estate giant said it wanted to “reimagine” the properties.
A statement released in June last year by the company said it intended to identify hoteliers to reopen and manage the properties, though the Irvine Co. would continue to retain ownership of the land and enter a long-term lease with the operators. The Resort at Pelican Hill would remain unaffected.
As of Friday, the Irvine Co. removed the Fashion Island hotel from its list of resorts. Hotel Irvine remains listed.
