A firefighter with over three decades of experience under his belt has been recognized for going above and beyond while off-duty.
Captain Gary O’Neill of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department was diving in the Goulds when he saw a man pulling another man out of a car parked on the side of the road.
O’Neill pulled over and performed CPR on the 90-year-old man, who had suffered a heart attack, and was able to revive him. Sadly, the man passed away a few hours later but the St. John’s Rotary Club, who honoured O’Neill with its 2022 Firefighter of the Year Award, says his heroic actions provided the man’s family with those last precious hours together.
For that, O’Neill says, the family has been thankful.
He says the family sent him a “really nice letter” and gave him their father’s Swiss army knife as a memento.
