Rockpool Bar & Grill
Sydney steakhouses have distinguished themselves by their innovation in recent years, with restaurants experimenting with flavour through dry-aging, utilising lesser-known cuts, and focusing on provenance. This has now been recognised on a global scale, with five Sydney restaurants taking out top 50 spots in the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurant Awards for 2023.
The always impressive Rockpool Bar & Grill has been heralded as the eighth best steak restaurant in the world. The Sydney mainstay is known for its simple but sophisticated dishes, with steak cuts from Australia’s best producers such as David Blackmore, Cape Grim and Coppertree Farms on the menu.
Elsewhere, Kingsleys Woolloomooloo has taken out number 31, with the CBD’s Bistecca at number 32. Porteno in Surry Hills nabbed 40th position, and The Gidley down on King Street came in at number 43.
Making the list is a major achievement, given the sheer calibre of steakhouses in the running each year. The top spot went to Parrilla Don Julio in Buenos Aires, with Hawksmoor in London runner-up.
Surprisingly, Sydney’s Firedoor was not listed in the top 101 this year, after taking out third in the world in 2022.
Notable mentions were also handed to four Melbourne steakhouses, named on the longer list of 101 restaurants. They were Steer Dining Room (51st) Butcher & Vine (77th), Macelleria (90th) and Entrecote (97th).
Update (April 3, 3.06pm): an earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that two Melbourne restaurants, rather than four, were named on the list.
