The Florida State Seminoles thumped Georgia Tech 41-16 on Saturday afternoon in Tallahassee. They were paced by star quarterback Jordan Travis who threw a career-high 396 passing yards and three scores on 24-of-38 passing. The Seminoles were dominant in all aspects of the game, out-gaining the Yellow Jackets 642 to 264 in total yards. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for FSU.
Despite a dominant performance, Florida State still has areas it can improve. The Seminoles were hit with 13 penalties for 104 yards and committed two turnovers (both fumbles) with recording a takeaway. Still, FSU was able to control the game once recovering from a slow first quarter that saw it hold a 7 to 0 lead. The Seminoles led 24-3 going into the locker room for halftime.
FSU running back Trey Benson had an impactful outing with 18 carries for 111 yards. The ‘Noles totaled 246 yards on the ground on 43 attempts, scoring two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Florida State’s defense allowed just 66 rushing yards and 198 passing yards.

GT 16 | FSU 41
Jordan Travis, Johnny Wilson, and others have career days as Florida State gets back in the win column. ‘Noles look healthy after the bye and remind everyone what their ceiling is. 5-3 headed down to Miami next Saturday night.#FSU
It was a great Saturday for Florida State which now will turn its attention to the stretch run. Moving forward, FSU has an in-state clash with Miami, Syracuse, Louisiana-Lafayette and Florida. It’s a challenging slate but provides the Seminoles an opportunity to end their regular season with a ton of momentum as they face their two biggest rivals along with a talented Syracuse team.
Total yardage right now is 120-2 in the home team’s favor, and FSU trails 3-0.
Florida State handled business in the end but there was a moment when FSU found itself concerned. There’s been a growing frustration in Tallahassee this season when it comes to finishing drives this season. That continued in the opening quarter against Georgia Tech. The Noles were dominant in all aspects but the scoreboard which of course eventually changed after a slow start.
Someone explain to my WHY Mike Norvell decides to forget how to make appropriate play calls at the 1-yard line
Frustration built due to Florida State’s fumble on the goal line which, in fairness, had more to due with poor execution than the play call. Either way, Florida State missed an opportunity to build a lead. The good news for the Seminoles is the execution was much better as the game went on and the losing streak has reached an end.
Florida State’s goal line offense has been special this season pic.twitter.com/BGJMzuigL4
Florida State has been within striking distance in most of the games it’s played this season, but finishing – whether drives or game – has been a sore spot. Again, things eventually took a positive turn but FSU’s challenging slate calls for immediate improvement in order to salvage what once was a promising season. There wasn’t a ton of positivity flowing after the first couple of drives, but FSU got the result that mattered.
Jordan Travis’ day is done.
He finished with a career-high 396 passing yards. A Florida State QB has eclipsed 400 yards passing only 19 times in history.
So close.
It was an electric outing for Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis who continued to show his massive improvement from a year ago. Travis looks much more comfortable as a passer and is able to extend or make plays with his legs. He finished just four yards away from joining the prestigious 400-yard club.
WHEEL ROUTE. Lawrance Toafili 62-yard CRIB CALL for Florida State! #GTvsFSU pic.twitter.com/VgMjLHGqbC
Florida State running back Lawrance Toafili put on a show, much to the dismay of Georgia Tech. He caught a 62-yard scoring toss and finished with 5 catches for 84 yards and 13 carries for 17 yards. He finished second in rushing and receiving on the afternoon. He operated like a swiss army knife, carving up the Yellow Jackets’ defense.

Remember that note about Travis using his improved arm talent along with his running ability to become a dynamic threat? His touchdown pass in the third quarter was evidence of that. Using his quickness to escape the pocket, Travis rolled right and floated a pass to wide receiver Ja’Khi Douglas, who caught it in stride for a score. It might not seem like a big deal at the surface, but that’s because Travis made it look simple. A sign of his growth.
You could feel the team tightening up. Jordan Travis was really good on that drive and took some pressure off the team. Made plays, got the offense in good spots with checks, executed well.
Nicely done.
Right before Travis and Douglas connected for the score, Florida State’s energy seemed to be depleting. The third-quarter score pumped life into FSU’s sideline and from there it was smooth sailing.
#FSU defense gets a goal line stand to preserve the 34-10 lead.
In the fourth quarter Georgia Tech marched into striking defense, but the Seminoles slammed the door on the Yellow Jackets. FSU’s defense allowed the Yellow Jackets to convert just 2 of 13 third-down opportunities.
Five Florida State players — Lawrance Toafili, Johnny Wilson, Ja’Khi Douglas, Camren McDonald and Mycah Pittman — each have at least three catches.#FSU hadn’t had more than three players tally 3+ catches in a game this season.
It was a busy day for Florida State’s pass-catchers. Not only did five players have at least three catches, but 10 players recorded at least one reception. Jordan Travis was consistent with spreading the wealth and the Seminoles skill players benefited from it.
