Perhaps the most recognized local Singaporean food, Hainanese Chicken Rice is a must-eat for every tourist visiting Singapore, and even for the locals, am sure we do fancy a plate of this delicious tender chicken every so often. Do a quick online search, and Tian Tian at Maxwell Food Centre always comes up top as the Hainanese Chicken Rice to try, though there really are many other options with some tasting even better IMHO. Here’s a list of Hainanese Chicken Rice stalls you should visit instead!
Nan Xiang Chicken Rice
This establishment along Tanjong Katong Road is an institution for the residents living in the vicinity. Consistently one of the best steamed chicken I have had, and you should order a portion of the Roast Pork and Char Siew here too. Long queues during peak meal hours, with many customers ordering this as a take-out for family meals at home. Highly recommended.
Address: 271 Tanjong Katong Road Singapore 437054

Rong Ji Chicken Rice & Porridge
This old-school chicken rice stall in Dunman Food Centre deserves a mention on this list. Operated by a old couple, you will see a snaking queue throughout their operating hours and they usually sells out before their supposing closing hour. Besides their delicious steamed chicken, order a portion of their Chicken Porridge. Very flavourful, with shreds of chicken meat, a generous portion of fried dough and that half-cooked chicken egg!
Address: 271 Onan Road Singapore 424768

Lam Bee Chicken Rice
This rather unassuming coffee shop and chicken rice stall is a gem for the residents at MacPherson. Head to Lam Bee for both its steamed chicken and roast pork. If not for their rice, which was a tad dry and lacking in terms of flavours, you do see me visiting Lam Bee more often!
Address: 78 Circuit Road #01-470 Singapore 370078

Nam Kee Chicken Rice Restaurant
This is one chicken rice restaurant I have been visiting the past 30 years. Quite frankly, Nam Kee does not have the best steamed chicken, though you should visit here for some authentic local zichar fare and chicken rice. The restaurant has not undergo much renovation since opening, except for the installation of air-conditioning, therefore the vibes at Nam Kee is already worth a visit.
Address: 201 Upper Thomson Road Singapore 574343

Yishun 925 Chicken Rice
One of the popular chicken rice stall in Singapore with a few outlets across the island now, their original stall in Yishun quickly became popular with local residents and received media attention years back. Love their chicken, though the rice itself lacks fragrance other stalls on this list offers.
Address: Flagship Stall at Blk 925, Yishun Central 1, #01-249, Singapore 760925
Chatterbox
Fancy having Hainanese Chicken Rice in an upscale restaurant? Chatterbox is the go-to for locals to host our visiting overseas friends to enjoy local Singapore cuisine in a polished setting. Of course, that’s also because they dish out mouthwatering chicken rice, as well as other local delights such as laksa and zichar items too! Newly renovated, and housed within Hilton Singapore Orchard, this is a place to be seen.
Address: 333 Orchard Road, #05-03, Singapore 238887

Boon Tong Kee
Speaking of being an institution, Tian Tian leads as a hawker stall offering Hainanese Chicken Rice, but it is Boon Tong Kee that leads the way when it comes to being a restaurant specializing in Hainanese Chicken Rice. Founding in 1979 as a hawker stall, before moving to become a full-fledged restaurant just some years later in 1983. Boon Tong Kee offers zi-char options (aka Singapore home-styled cooked food) together with chicken rice, and has over 8 restaurants islandwide today.
Address: Flagship Restaurant at 399, 401 & 403 Balestier Road, Singapore 329801
Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice
It used to be really good. Yes, we did not like Delicious as much as we used to. Though you should no be surprised to see a snaking queue here should you visit them. I still do recommend heading here for a meal should you fancy enjoying your chicken rice with refillable Cabbage Soup, which is delish, and their freshly made Achar, a local pickled dish with cucumber, pineapple and other vegetables. Yes, both sides are complimentary.
Address: 865 Mountbatten Road #B1-85/87 Katong Shopping Centre Singapore 437844
Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice
Stumbled on this while looking for chicken rice stalls to try in the east. Chuen Chuen established since the late 1970s, and has a hawker stall in Balestier and a coffeeshop along Changi Road. The chicken itself is spot-on for us, tender and flavourful. Typically not crowded during the weekdays with ample seats, visit here for a fuss-free fix of one of our favourite local dish.
Address: 2 Lorong Sarina, Singapore 416647

Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice
When the ex-head chef of Tian Tian opened Ah Tai a few stalls away from the incumbent at Maxwell, you know if it is going to be hitting headlines for many years to come. As it stands today, Ah Tai already has a following of its own, though perhaps not similar to the media attention Tian Tian enjoys. Head here to enjoy a less commercialized approach to hawkerfare in Singapore, and let Ah Tai entice you with his take on Hainanese Chicken Rice after years of fronting Tian Tian everyday; pun intended.
Address: 1 Kadayanallur Street, #01-07, Maxwell Food Centre, Singapore 069184
Golden Mile Thien Kee Steamboat
Not a chicken rice stall, but a restaurant specializing in hotpots. Thien Kee offers the fragrant chicken rice as their default option for orders of rice which frankly is to-die-for good, and also Hainanese Chicken as a side to their steamboat. Perhaps one to go for nostalgic reason as Golden Mile Complex will be closing down next year following its en-bloc earlier this year.
Address: 5001 Beach Road, #B1-20, Golden Mile Complex, Singapore 199588
