DRIVERS OF FOOD INSECURITY
Climatic Shocks including floods, droughts and desert locusts.

Macroeconomic challenges have impacted all countries. Inflation has been an issue across all countries particularly in Sudan which recorded hyperinflation, peaking at 359% in 2022. Currency devaluation has been an issue in Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan.
Food Prices fluctuated significantly thanks to multiple shocks to the region. Food prices spiked in 2016/17 at the same time as the drought. They have dramatically increased in 2022 due to five below-average rainy seasons in the Eastern Horn of Africa which has reduced domestic produce and other factors including global commodity price shocks and currency depreciation.
The COVID-19 pandemic, had a significant impact on food insecurity due to not only health risks to the population but also the fallout of containment measures intended to protection the populations.
