Food relief and dignity shouldn’t ever be exclusive. Read about the breadth of dignified support provided in March.
“No different to a grocery store”
The food budget in households has quickly come to be seen as discretionary spend.
When you have already tried to cut your spending down by buying cheaper cuts of meat or supermarket brand products only and have really gotten as creative as possible with mealtimes and still have no room to move, you realise you are in trouble and need help.
Demand for our service has almost doubled. Meet one of those most in need.
Last month alone we received 406,767 kg of incoming food to process and get ready for the shop floor and of course for distribution.
This massive ongoing task requires us to decide where stock moves to, whether to store in the freezer or distribute it to our branches.
Being able to safely store that much food and produce needs a space bigger than first expected.

The donated food lifecycle
Our resident chef, Grant, has been the master of the mystery box challenge since the Community Kitchen opened in mid-2015.
Grant is no ordinary chef, he works primarily with produce donated to us, meaning he gives a second life to food that we rescue which would otherwise end up in landfill. To date, he has managed to help reduce our waste from 11% to 4% through our Community Kitchen.

CBH fuelling Wheatbelt nutrition education
Thanks to a generous donation from CBH, our nutritionists Skye and Julia hit the road to deliver our popular nutrition education and cooking programs to school students in the Wheatbelt.
With hundreds of kilometres of road before them, our nutritionists managed to make a lot happen thanks to this incredible support.
Changing long-term health outcomes in Fremantle
“I liked the cooking, preparation information, info about food groups and enjoyed the food. I enjoy this type of program and would love to have more of this!”
Our Healthy Eating Hub in Fremantle has been operating for just over a year now, and in that time we have delivered 56 nutrition and cooking sessions.

Use by or best before? What’s the difference?
All packaged foods sold in Australia must comply with the labelling requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which allows consumers to be informed of the nature and ingredients of foods before they buy them.
There is a big difference between use-by dates and best-before dates.
Ramadan, so much more than a daily fast
Meet Kalyisah one of our valued nutritionists. Kalyisah is fasting for Ramadan.
Ramadan is a physical and mental challenge, but Kalyisah said it also reminds her how important it is to have food on the table and water to drink to function every day, “It puts life into perspective because I know there are people out there that experience this struggle every day.”
She said, “It can make you really tired and that I need to take breaks more often and it takes a few days to build up stamina to get through the long days. Practicing Ramadan is not without its struggle, but it also makes me feel grateful for what I normally have and how I can help others.”

Celebrating everyone’s youth
Youth Week WA on 14-21 April is an annual state-wide celebration of the positive contributions of young people to our community throughout Western Australia.
Youth are more likely to skip breakfast or overeat nutrient-poor foods but having healthy dietary habits in adolescence like eating fruit, veg and taking part in a breakfast can improve overall happiness and sleep satisfaction and perceived healthiness.
From this perspective, our Pilbara programs which target youth, help empower those aged 12-18 to make healthy food choices. We’re proud of the support we’re able to provide to youth and communities throughout our great northern regions.
