Beverley, a mum of three, knows what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet. She cycles to our Mobile Foodbank in Rockingham each week to purchase essential groceries for her family. With a 4-year-old daughter and 6 and 8-year old boys, Beverley is determined to provide her children with healthy, nutritious food. “It’s not always easy,” Beverley admits. “The Mobile Foodbank just allows me to feed my family the nutritious meals they deserve.“
Hunger is a terrible Christmas gift – help make sure families avoid itAre we a society that lets children go hungry? There are 120,000 children living in severely food insecure households in Western Australia. Parents will often skip meals, sometimes for a whole day, just so their children can eat. In a state as rich as Western Australia no one should be going hungry, especially our children. We all know what hunger feels like. That rumbling and grumbling feeling deep in the pit of our stomachs. It’s a hollow feeling and we can’t think about much else until we satisfy the hunger. We know we are hungry because of the ghrelin hormone. The hungrier you are the more ghrelin is produced. For most of us, the answer is simple. We reach for a sandwich, an apple, our favourite snack. But for 388,000 West Aussie households they cannot satisfy their ghrelin. For Kiah, Foodbank has been a lifeline – a way to feed her and her children’s ghrelins. It has helped her to put good quality and healthy food on the table for her family. She uses the fresh produce she gets at Foodbank to bulk up meals. Otherwise, she would be eating 79c chips from Woolworths. “I make a really great chicken and vegetable soup and all the veggies come from Foodbank. It doesn’t cost me more than $2 for that meal for 6 people. You cannot get that anywhere else. I am super grateful, I don’t know what I would do without Foodbank.” Can you help Kiah’s and other families like hers have food on their table this Christmas? Donate today.
