Every year, millions of tonnes of food are wasted. But thanks to our great partnerships with amazing folks like growers, supermarkets and Perth Markets we are rescuing food that might otherwise be tossed. Those “funny-looking” tomatoes or “too-small” avocados – food that’s perfectly good but not quite supermarket shelf-worthy.
Bridging the distanceAccess to healthy food shouldn’t be a luxury. But in regional Western Australia, high living costs, vast distances and limited choices make it a struggle with potential health consequences. The 2023 Regional Price Index paints a harsh reality: groceries, housing and healthcare cost significantly more than in Perth while incomes are lower.
AngloGold Ashanti delivers food diverted by floodsWhen floods in outback Western Australia closed roads and access, AngloGold Ashanti got creative. In March 2024, massive flooding closed off roads to communities and mines out of Kalgoorlie impacting food deliveries. A truck full of fresh produce, milk and groceries were unable to make it to its destination – AngloGold Ashanti’s mine was instead donated to Foodbank.
Are we a society that lets children go hungry? There are 120,000 children living in severely food insecure households in Western Australia. Parents will often skip meals, sometimes for a whole day, just so their children can eat. Jane is one of them. Jane is a wife and a mother of four children. She and her family had a great life with double income and enough money to support their family. Then her life turned in an instant. A car accident left her husband with life altering injuries and PTSD. He could no longer work and needed intensive care. Then her own medical issues meant she could also no longer work. “I never thought I would be in this situation. Reaching out can be the hardest thing to do. At first, I felt embarrassed, it was really hard to accept”. In a State as rich as Western Australia no one should be going hungry, especially our children. Jane never thought she’d need Foodbank, until she did.

Our volunteers, the heart of FoodbankWe are more than just a warehouse filled with food. We are a powerful community stitched together by the countless stories of our volunteers. Each one brings a unique strength – their experiences, motivations and unwavering dedication. Together they weave a vital message: no one in Western Australia needs to face hunger. In May, we celebrated the great work of our volunteers during National Volunteer Week.
From FOOD Cent$ to nom!Our mission has always been about more than just filling plates in times of crisis. Originally named ‘Food Cent$’, this initiative was a project developed by the Department of Health, which identified Foodbank as the ideal partner to reach those most in need. In 1998, the Department handed over the management of the project to Foodbank, marking the beginning of our delivery of this crucial service.
But a crucial question emerged: how could we empower individuals and families to make healthy choices long after receiving emergency food relief? And so, our nutrition education programs were born.
Sports fans delivering the mealsSports fans, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. In May both the West Coast Eagles and Peel Thunder hosted charity rounds in support of Foodbank. The West Coast Eagles Million Meal Challenge raised an incredible 230,136 meals. The McCusker Charitable Foundation generously tripled the impact of every donation. The Peel Thunder Charity Round sponsored by Alcoa raised over 55,000 meals for people doing it tough in Peel. These donations were generously matched by Alcoa. Families right across Western Australia are feeling the cost-of-living pressure and are reaching out to us for help. It’s no longer just the interest rate rises we have had, it’s rent, fuel and the high grocery prices that are also impacting everyday West Aussies. We couldn’t have done this without you.
