Meeting Kiah, it’s impossible not to be drawn in by her radiant warmth and unshakable positivity. A loving mother of three and skilled venue manager, she is the last person you’d imagine facing food insecurity, but life delivered some unexpected challenges that saw her fostering her two nieces and supporting her elderly diabetic father.
This is when Kiah turned to us for help and we think it’s time you heard her story.
A day in the life of a public health nutritionist
When you think of a day in the life of a public health nutritionist, you might imagine someone quietly analysing nutritional data in a sterile lab. However, spend a day with Laura Bryce, a Public Health Nutritionist at Foodbank WA, and you’ll quickly realise that her job is anything but typical. Laura’s role is a dynamic blend of education, community engagement, and hands-on involvement.

Meet your microscopic hunger ghrelins
In your tummy, deep down inside, there’s a rumbling and grumbling feeling. A hollow feeling. This is the call of the ghrelins, your hunger hormones. The hungrier you are, the higher your levels of ghrelin. You won’t see them, but you’ll feel them. When you satisfy your hunger, the ghrelins’ numbers will retreat.
But for 1 in 5 hungry West Aussie kids, their ghrelins are still multiplying. Will you do something to feed the ghrelins of hungry kids this Christmas with our exclusive hands-on gift? Keep reading to explore the full story behind your hunger ghrelins.

Foodbank Hunger Report 2023

ATCO, Mitsui and Telethon backing nutrition education
Our mission to empower Western Australians with the knowledge and skills to improve their health outcomes has taken significant leaps forward thanks to the generous support of ATCO, Mitsui and Telethon.
This financial year our nutritionists have delivered 611 sessions to 7,092 attendees from Perth to the Pilbara. ATCO are supporting our youth education programs, Mitsui are powering our adult nutrition education programs in Geraldton and Telethon are supporting child health with Food Sensations® for Children – all valuable nutrition education programs we couldn’t deliver without their support.

Can you help families this Christmas?
For a while I didn’t call Foodbank as you always think there is someone worse off than you. And I do work and I have a car – that was paid for years ago – but I have nice things, I’m not starving. But if I didn’t go to Foodbank we would be living on chips for 79cents. They wouldn’t be getting the quality that I can get shopping with Foodbank.
I am super grateful, I don’t know what I would do without Foodbank.
There are 388,000 food insecure households in Western Australia. Kiah’s is one of them.
Kiah is a mum of three young children. She has recently also taken in her two young nieces. And helps support and care for her father with Type 1 diabetes.
Can you help Kiah’s and other families like hers have food on their table this Christmas? Please, donate today.
You’re not alone this Christmas
