The Luxembourg U17 men’s team sensationally defeated England in European Under-17 Championship qualifying on Tuesday evening, while the senior national team lost 1-0 to Bosnia in a friendly.
— U17s shock England —
Although England U17s dominated possession during the first half, the Red Lions defended well and earned chances of their own. Half an hour in, Luxembourg were awarded a penalty kick which Tim Flick converted, before Thomas Souchard doubled the lead after half time.
The England team was eventually reduced to 9 players due to two red cards and could not break through the Luxembourg defence.
It was an impressive and well-deserved victory by the Red Lions, who finished their qualifying campaign second in their group and should hopefully qualify for the European Championships, depending on results in other groups.
The qualifiers were played in 8 groups and 15 teams will qualify for the finals in Israel. This includes all first places and the 7 best runners up, with Israel, as host, qualifying automatically.
— Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 Luxembourg —
In a game we covered live on RTL Today, a goal by Edin Dzeko in the final minutes saw Luxembourg lose 1-0 against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Luxembourg were arguably stronger during the first half, but the Bosnians had the better chances and it was only thanks to goalkeeper Anthony Moris that the score was still goalless at the break. A cagey second half saw few chances, until star striker Edin Dzeko scored late to give Bosnia-Herzegovina a 1-0 win.
