Lion City Sailors 2 emerged victorious in the final of the FC Bayern Youth Cup Singapore on Sunday (July 17), following a 1-0 win over ActiveSG Football Academy (AFA) Development Centre at the National Stadium.
The youth competition, which featured 23 teams from the FAS centres of excellence, school football academies and AFA, was held in a seven-a-side format.
Nearly 1,500 spectators comprising families and friends of the young players came to watch the two-day event.
Fifteen boys from these teams have been picked for centralised training. They will be vying for the 10 spots in the Singapore squad for October’s Bayern Youth Cup world finals at the Allianz Arena.
Shaun Chiu, 15, co-captain of the ActiveSG Football Academy (AFA) Development Centre said: “I am hopeful to be looked into for a spot at the World Finals in October. I hope to make Singapore proud with a win. Playing here at the National Stadium is truly exciting, it is an experience that will surely help me, and I hope to play here more in front of my parents and friends.”
Tax manager Christopher Lee, whose son Seth competed in the tournament, said: “The Bayern Youth Cup is very competitive because the Under-15 boys are playing for clubs and their academies, so as parents we very much look forward to competitions such as this. It is exciting as a family to watch our boys play at the National Stadium. We watched Liverpool play Crystal Palace on Friday, and to see him play on the same field on the weekend is just as exciting.”
