French Home Sales Plummeted Last Year
In 2023, France recorded its steepest year-over-year drop in home sales in decades, according to the Fédération Nationale de l’Immobilier, a French union of estate agents. Some 875,000 non-new-build houses were sold last year, a 22% drop from the 1.11 million recorded in 2022, and the sharpest year-on-year drop for at least 50 years. The “extremely brutal” decline is due to “the combined effect of inflation, rising interest rates and increasingly difficult access to mortgages,” said Loïc Cantin, the union’s president. U.K. Real Estate Agents Optimistic, Survey Shows
British real estate agents expect a brighter year ahead for the U.K. market, according to the latest survey from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. Measures of both sales expectations and new buyer inquiries rose in the December survey, as falling mortgage rates improved buyer demand. Meanwhile, a measure of agreed-to sales also increased from November to December, while the average time agents said it took to complete a sale declined. Reuters
