Four new hawker centres are slated to open by the third quarter of 2022, said Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor during the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) Committee of Supply (COS) debate on Mar 7.
The new hawker centres will be at Bukit Canberra, Fernvale, One Punggol, and Senja.
Minister Khor added that five more hawker centres in the construction stages will be progressively completed within the next few years, and that there are two more hawker centres currently in its planning and design stages.
There will also be a new hawker centre at Tampines Town, with more details to be revealed in due time.
These new hawker centres will have features that encourage sustainability, such as food waste digesters, and even solar panels for some.
To allow future generations to continue enjoying hawker food and hawker culture, MSE and the National Environment Agency (NEA) are looking into enhancing hawker centres as a key social infrastructure and a feature of Singapore’s urban landscape, said MSE.
Some existing programmes to encourage young talents to join the industry include the Incubation Stall Programme and the Hawkers’ Development Programme.
There is also the Hawkers’ Succession Scheme (HSS), which allows veteran hawkers without successors to pass their trade down to aspiring hawkers.
Two redeveloped hawker centres will also begin operations this year. These include Market Street Hawker Centre, which will be relocated to the new CapitaSpring building and begin operations in April, and Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, which will replace Tanglin Halt Food Centre at Commonwealth Drive and open by the fourth quarter of 2022.
