New lifestyles and new family routines are constantly leading consumers to make different choices than in the past when it comes to buying fruit and vegetables in supermarkets, opting for ready-made meals that are quick to prepare. The large-scale retail trade is responding well to this need and for some years now has been offering countless solutions, starting with fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, available in all refrigerated counters.

A case in point is the butternut squash, one of the most sought-after vegetables, especially during its ripening period. However, the fresh-cut processing makes it possible to have this product available even off-season. The finished product is obtained by peeling and processing fruit and vegetables, without affecting their integrity in any way. This has an impact not only on the appearance, but also on the organoleptic and nutritional level.
PND, a manufacturer of industrial fruit processing machines, contributes to the fresh-cut sector by constantly perfecting new operating systems and new machines that, with minimum waste, are able to guarantee optimum production.
The PL1D – PL2D – PL4D pumpkin peeling machine can have one, two or four workstations and is also designed for processing pineapple and melon,” says Virginia Cascella, who has been an export manager at PND for more than 15 years. “It is a semi-automatic machine, with manual loading, equipped with an electrical panel with two inverters, one to regulate the speed of rotation of the fruit and one for the speed of the blade. The operator loads the fruit in the preset position, presses the start button and the machine starts operating. The arm that peels the pumpkin follows its shape, even when the shape is irregular. In fact, the machine can peel pumpkins as high as 400 mm and as large as 250 mm in diameter. Depending on the model chosen, the machine can peel between 4 and 28 fruits per minute.
After the peeling process has been completed, it is also possible to cut the fruit. It is possible to combine the peeling machine with another machine, which cuts the vegetable in half, or to perform the peeling and cutting by hand with counters and blades suitable for this type of processing.

“Over the last few years, we have seen an increased interest in the pumpkin processing machines, to the extent that we have increased the production of this machinery,” continues Cascella, “by upgrading and equipping it with new cutting systems. We are always about safe and efficient cutting systems that are easy to use and sanitize. It is in high demand in Italy, and strongly exported to the US and Europe. A new machine will soon be installed in Saudi Arabia”.
The machine is made of food-grade stainless steel, an essential material for food processing, in order to guarantee maximum hygiene and durability. The company, as is well known by now, operates on a global scale and takes part in the most important trade fairs in the sector.
