Happy first day of 2023!
With 2022 ending on a note of trepidation, we thought we’d start the new year with things to look forward to that could improve our lives very soon.
Take, for instance, 3D printing. Okay, so you’ve heard that just about anything can be printed these days, from your clothes to homes.
But did you know researchers are developing a way to possibly 3D-print you a new heart, liver or kidney? This means no more waiting on the transplant list – a revolutionary lifesaver.

The 5-part What’s The Big Deal? “cuts through the white noise and hype” surrounding new technologies, says series producer Tang Hui Huan, to point you to exciting developments you may have missed.
Think: Plant robots and smart ‘wearables’ that predict diseases before you get sick or tell if you’re lying. Comedian Rishi Budhrani crashes the labs of top researchers and asks what a layman would: “What’s in it for me? Why should I care?”
Autonomous vehicles, meanwhile, have been hyped up for years, but failed to materialise in our daily lives. Until, that is, now?
Expect to see the first commercial AV shuttle-bus service on a school campus in early 2023, and maybe even an AV bus service to Johor Bahru in coming years.

But with concerns about safety and reliability, Talking Point headed to South Korea (one of the leading markets for AVs) to see what it really takes to get them on the roads.
“We were the first to get a glimpse inside an AV bus to be launched in Seoul,” says executive producer Imelda Saad. And on Jeju Island, the team experienced the longest commercially-available AV ride. “It was launched just a week before our crew got there, so this was pretty new stuff.”
All this offers a fascinating glimpse of the near-future. But if what’s on your mind now are the somber questions of what 2023 might hold in terms of inflation and global conflict, check out our 3-part look at the year ahead.
